Who can nominate someone for the award?
Nominations may be submitted by any legal resident of the U.S. (including the District of Columbia but excluding Puerto Rico and other U.S.territories or possessions) who is at least 18 years of age (or the age of majority under the laws of the state in which the person resides) as of April 1, 2010.
NOTE: Employees, franchisees, officers, members, or directors of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc., any of The UPS Store or Mail Boxes Etc. ® franchised locations, United Parcel Service, Inc. (“UPS”), Marine Toys For Tots Foundation, Scholastic Inc., the National Center for Family Literacy, their respective parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, and the advertising and judging agencies involved in the Alferd Williams Literacy Award (the “Program Parties”) and family members (spouse, child, parent or sibling) or persons living in the same household of any of the foregoing are not eligible to submit a nomination or to be nominated for the Literacy Award.

How do I submit a nomination?

Can I submit supporting materials, e.g., photographs, news clips, letters, testimonials and other items?
Please do not include any supporting materials. Supporting documentation may be requested at the discretion of the judges.

What criteria will be used in the judging?
The judging panel will be evaluating nominees based on one or more of the following: (a) the nominee’s effectiveness in raising awareness of childhood illiteracy; (b) the nominee’s ability to bring resources to bear in addressing illiteracy; and (c) the nominee’s ability to develop a love of reading among at-risk youth.

How will the winner be determined?
The winner will be selected through the following three-step process:
STEP ONE: Selection of the Finalist Nominees
An independent panel of judges comprising representatives of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc., the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Scholastic Inc., and the National Center for Family Literacy will select up to ten (10) nominees from among all valid and eligible nominations received during the nomination period.
STEP TWO: Posting of Finalist Nominees for Public Voting
The judging panel will select up to five (5) finalist nominees to proceed to the public voting and final winner selection phases of the program. Beginning September 1, 2010 and continuing through September 30, 2010, profiles and nominations of up to five (5) Finalist Nominees selected by the judging panel will be posted on www.scholastic.com/literacyaward for public viewing and voting. Individuals may log onto the Web site and click “Vote,” beginning on or about 12:01:00 A.M. Eastern Time, September 1, 2010 and continuing until on or about 11:59:59 P.M. Eastern Time, September 30, 2010 for one finalist nominee, with one (1) vote per visitor per day allowed.
The Finalist Nominee receiving the most online votes will be provided with 25-points that shall be applied toward the final selection of the winner by the judging panel as explained under step three.
STEP THREE: Final Selection of a Winner-Designate and Runners-Up
The judging panel will select the winner and four (4) runners-up using a point system based on the judging criteria, with each member of the judging panel allocating a total of 100 points among the five (5) finalist nominees. The finalist nominees with the greatest number of points shall be designated the Alferd Williams Literacy Award winner.

When will the winner be announced?
The 2010 Alferd Williams Literacy Award Winner will be announced on November 1, 2010, and posted at: (1) www.theupsstore.com; (2) www.scholastic.com/literacyaward; and (3) www.toysfortotsliteracy.org for 60 days following the announcement.

What prizes does the Alferd Williams Literacy Award winner receive?
The 2010 Alferd Williams Literacy Award Winner will receive:
- A set of engraved crystal bookends
- A donation of $500 in books from Scholastic Inc. to an organization selected by winner whose charitable mission is to serve less-fortunate children
- A 3 day/2 night trip to Washington, D.C. for two persons to attend the U.S. Marine Corps Summer Parade in June 2011
- $500 in printing, mailbox or shipping services from The UPS Store.

Do I have to make a purchase to submit a nomination?
No purchase or contribution is necessary to submit a nomination for the award or to be nominated. A purchase or contribution will not increase or affect a nominee’s chances of being selected.
