Casting Joy: A Day of Sunshine and Smiles at Hart State Park

On a sun-drenched day in Hartwell, Georgia, Toys for Tots hosted a fishing event at Hart State Park that brought more than just bait and bobbers—it delivered unforgettable joy to 24 local children with special needs. With rods in hand and hearts full of excitement, the children, along with their parents and guardians, spent the day exploring nature, making memories, and discovering the simple magic of time outdoors.

Thanks to the generosity of Ollie’s, every child left with their very own fishing pole. The Christian Appalachian Project added to the excitement by providing hats, sunglasses, binoculars, and a nature book to spark future adventures. “It’s not just a gift—it’s an invitation to explore,” said one volunteer. “You could see the wonder in their eyes as they imagined what else they might discover.”

Northwest Exterminators kept spirits high and stomachs full with a delicious lunch, while the beloved Gunny Bear made a special appearance, bringing laughter and hugs to the shoreline.

The event was made possible through the incredible support of Mrs. Teresa Phillips, Executive Director of Connections for Special Parents, Aaron Thomas of the Christian Appalachian Project, and local heroes like Sheriff Chris Carroll of the Hart County Sheriff’s Office, EMTs, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Their presence ensured the day was not only fun—but safe, welcoming, and deeply meaningful.

“This is what community looks like,” said LtGen Laster, CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “When we come together, we don’t just give—we create moments that matter.”

At Toys for Tots, we believe joy shouldn’t be seasonal. Events like this remind us that our mission goes beyond holiday gifts—it’s about nurturing hope, connection, and happiness all year long.
