It started, as so many of Toys for Tots’ efforts do, with a simple mission: to bring hope, dignity, and a sense of normalcy to children who need it most.
Over the last weekend in May, that mission came to life in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where the Toys for Tots and an incredible network of community partners came together to support 113 foster children from across Southern Kentucky—an experience designed just for them.
From the moment they arrived, it was clear this would be more than a day out. It was an opportunity to give something many of them don’t often have: the power to choose.
Inside Five Below, that transformation began to unfold. Each child was invited to select two items—one that encouraged outdoor play and one that was simply for them. At first, some moved cautiously through the aisles, but it didn’t take long before the room filled with energy. You could see it in their faces—the realization that this moment was theirs. That they mattered. That their choices mattered.
By the end of the experience, those small decisions had turned into 231 toys and 250 additional items—each one representing more than just a gift, but a moment of confidence, independence, and joy.
That same spirit carried over to Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, where the focus shifted to something just as important: literacy. Every child was encouraged to choose two books of their own. Not assigned, not selected for them—but chosen. For many, it was a quiet but powerful moment—holding a book that sparked their curiosity, that belonged to them, that opened the door to imagination and possibility. By the end of the day, 194 books had been placed into the hands of these foster children and into community spaces that will continue to serve them long after the weekend ended.
But what made this event truly special wasn’t just what the children received—it was who showed up.
Veteran organizations across the community—American Legion, Marine Corps League, VFW, and AMVETS—came together with one shared purpose: to support these children and families. Their collective effort was on full display the night before, when a Bingo fundraiser brought the community together and raised over $5,200 to help sustain the mission. Additional support ensured that every dollar could go further, reinforcing what we see time and again: when a community stands united, there is no limit to the good it can do.
At the heart of it all were two remarkable young leaders—Toys for Tots Youth Ambassadors Trent Harris and Darby Meredith—who brought the mission to life in a way only peer connection can. They weren’t standing on the sidelines or working behind the scenes; they were right there in the aisles, walking alongside the children, talking with them, laughing with them, and helping them feel at ease.
For many of these children, connecting with adults can sometimes feel distant or transactional—but seeing someone closer to their own age, someone who chose to show up for them, created something different. It built trust. It created comfort. Trent and Darby didn’t just assist with the event—they made it personal. They encouraged hesitant children to explore, celebrated their choices, and made sure no one felt overlooked.
In those small interactions—helping a child pick out a toy, sharing excitement over a book, offering a simple word of encouragement—they reinforced something powerful: you are not alone. Their presence sent a message that went beyond the event itself—that there are people, even peers, who care deeply about their future and are willing to stand beside them.
That is the kind of leadership that defines the Toys for Tots mission. And in Bowling Green, it was on full display.
In just two days, 113 children in need were reminded that they matter, hundreds of items were distributed, and countless smiles were shared. But the true impact goes far beyond numbers. It lives in the confidence each foster child felt while making a choice, the excitement of opening a new book, and the sense of belonging that comes from knowing an entire community showed up just for them.
This is what it means to be a year-round force for good.
