Reel Moments Create Real Impact

On a warm June morning in Maple Shade, New Jersey, Toys for Tots brought its mission to life in a powerful way—proving that support for children goes far beyond the holiday season.

With fishing rods in hand—many for the very first time—these children learned new skills, shared laughter, and built friendships as they cast their lines into the water. Volunteers from the Maple Shade Police Department stood side-by-side with them, patiently teaching and encouraging, turning the event into what many fondly called a “Cops and Bobbers” day. By the end of the morning, what began as simple instruction had grown into moments of pride, accomplishment, and trust.

“This fishing event is about more than spending time on the water—it’s about creating moments where children feel supported, encouraged, and included,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity to spark confidence that can last a lifetime.”

The morning was filled with simple but meaningful moments—sharing lunch together, enjoying snacks and ice cream, and forming new friendships in a welcoming, supportive environment. By the end of the event, the children left with more than new gear; they carried home a sense of accomplishment, belonging, and the knowledge that there are people in their community who care.

This event is part of Toys for Tots’ ongoing commitment to provide meaningful, year-round support to children facing difficult circumstances. While the Program is widely known for delivering toys during the holidays, moments like these reflect a broader mission: creating opportunities for connection, growth, and joy throughout the entire year.
